
The Daughters of the Sacred Heart (DSH) is an international congregation that has its headquarters in Malta. It was found on the 21st of November 1903 by a Maltese nun; Maria Teresa Nuzzo in Nuzzo institute in Hamrun. The main aim of Maria Teresa Nuzzo was to give sound human, intellectual and Christian formation to children and to prepare the young girls for life. The distinctive charism of the Daughters of the Sacred Heart is charity, simplicity and humility. The mission which is the driving force of the congregation is the new evangelization for the transmission of the Christian faith.
The congregation has grown over the years since its foundation in Malta. The sisters offer their service in India, Philippines, Rome, Wales, U.S.A, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. The congregation came to Africa for the first time through Kenya in 1980. Since then, the DSH has expanded to two other East African countries namely Tanzania since 2004 and Uganda 2015 respectively. Education is the primary apostolate of DSH. The DSH endevours to offer holistic education inspired by charity, simplicity and humility.
In Tanzania, the sisters give their service in the Teresa Nuzzo Primary School in Arusha and Sacred Heart Primary School in Buza- Dar es Salaam.
